Drawing Hair with photoshop

Learn how to design your own realistic looking hair with photoshop. This tutorial practices the use of smudge and blur tools.

Skill level:

Time Required:
Approximately 30 minutes
Techniques/Tools Covered:
Smudging and Blur.
Author: 'jezebel

Step 1 - Choose a fairly neutral base color to start with

.

Step 2 - Decide what color you want the hair to be and start to block in the general shape of your hairstyle.

Step 3 - With a darker color, begin to accentuate the shadows. Usually hair lays down in clumps and layers so try not to focus on individual hairs and lines, get the shape down first:

Step 4 -Here I've started to smooth out my coloring a bit... you'll also note that I am a veeeery messy painter. This doesn't work well for everybody, but it works ok for me. I like to start sloppy and tighten things up as the image progresses. :)

Step 5 - I use a custom brush consisting of several small dots to sweep in "strands" of hair. This way works quickest and easiest for me. We're still bumping up those highlights and shadows.

Step 6 - I applied a shadow "under" the hair since there is no face... that way its not floating ;) Remember that your hair will more than likely cast shadows across the face of your figure, if you forget that part you will often lose depth in the image. Again I've smoothed out some of my painting:

Step 7 - I've brought out more individual clumps of hair and started to add a little more fine detail at this point:

Step 8 -With a finer brush I'm still sweeping in some of the smaller hairs... try not to get too hung up on that though. Lots of stringy hairs don't look very good. ;D

Step 9 - This is the last step in the tutorial. If I were actually painting I would take this further, and so should you. :) I've deepened the shadows in several areas to accentuate the way the layers fall. I also brushed in some brighter strands of hair and cleaned up the "part".

Step 10 - Just some color adjustments for fun, blue hair. Blue is gooooood. :D

Blossom Brush

Learn how to create your very own simple and effective custom blossom / leaves brush, and use it to make beautiful art. This tutorial will exercise the use of brushes and define custom brushes.

Skill level:

Time Required:
Approximately 20 minutes
Techniques/Tools Covered:
Brushes.

Preview

Step 1

Create a "Leaf" or "Blossom" like pattern,

On a new file and make sure that it's a transparent layer too!!!

Step 2

After you've made your blosson, select it and go to "edit -> define brush"

Step 3

Now open a new layer
(with settings "Content") white as a background color... Just because its nicer to work on a white canvas rather than a transparent one.

When you "define brush" what you just did was create a new brush that can be used and selected from your brush box.

Create a new layer ontop of the locked white BG and choose the new brush you've just created

Then goto the brush properties box to change the brush settings.

Select the following:
"shape dynamics"
"scattering"
"smoothing"

For:
"Shape Dynamics"
Size jitter: 51%
Minimum diameter: 9%
Angle Jitter: 41%
Roundnss Jitter: 27%
Minimum Roundness: 25%

For:
"Scattering"
Scatter: 455%
Count: 3%
Count Jitter: 0%

And you dont need to set option for "smoothing"

Step 4

Palette that kaze will be using, you can choose whatever colors you'd like but remember that shadows are "cool" colours such as blue, purple green" etc...

And shadows themselves usually have a tiny of blue.

So after you've bessed with the brush settings, =D blossom away!!!

What I did for number "6" was blurred it a bit using the "Blur tool" then used the "dodge tool" (with midtones" as settings)

Abstract Lines Background

Create wallpaper background similar to windows vista. Follow this detailed steps in this tutorial and create what you've been waiting for.

Preview:

Abstract Lines Background.

Step 1:

Let's start out by creating a new file. I used a 550x900 pixels canvas set at 72dpi, and I filled my background with a black color. Now grab the background below and insert into your canvas in its own layer.

Step 2:

Create a new layer set and name it 'Abstract Lines'. Now select the brush tool and set the size to 45 px soft brush. In a new layer paint a medium sized line with # 006C6A color shade as shown below.

Step 3:

Go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur, apply the settings below to the paint line layer. If your results are thin in color just duplicate the layer and merge them both.

Step 4:

Under Layer Style(Layer > Layer Style) add an Inner Shadow and Gradient Overlay blending options to your motioned paint layer.

Step 5:

Duplicate the motioned paint layer without any layer styles attached. Position it on the right side and set the layer's blending mode to Color Dodge. Duplicate this layer so the dodge effect is thicker on the design.

Step 6:

Once again duplicate the motioned paint layer without any layer styles. Position it as shown below, finish it off by duplicating the layer so its thicker on the design.

Step 7:

Duplicate the 'Abstract Line' layer set and merge it by going to Layer > Merge Layer Set. Make sure you have the layer set highlighted on the layers window or the merge option won't be active. position the layer design next to the original abstract line. Then set the layer's blending mode to Lighten at 46%opacity level.

Step 8:

Now duplicate the lightened layer from the last step by 3 to 4 times and position this designs all over the canvas. Make each copy unique with a different opacity levels.

Step 9:

Add a marquee selection around your canvas and go to Edit > Copy Merged. Then go back to Edit > Paste, this should add a new layer with a copy of your current design. Set the layer's blending mode to Hard Light at 49% opacity level.

Step 10:

Copy your current design as shown on step nine then use rotate option on Edit > Transform.

Step 1:

Let's start out by creating a new file. I used a 550x240 pixels canvas set at 72dpi, and I filled my background with a black color. In a new layer add a scene picture with a soccer ball, grab the example used in this tutorial here.

Step 2:

Select the Pen Tool with Paths on, on your canvas create a path lines similar to the picture show below.

Step 3:

Select the brush tool and set the size to a 13 soft brush. Then set your foreground color to #F9930F color shade. Now right click your mouse on the canvas to access an option box , select Stroke Path use the settings below.

Step 4:

Under Layer Style(Layer > Layer Style) add an Outer Glow and Inner Glow blending options to the orange curved line layer.

Step 5:

Now that you know how to make the glowing curved lines you can be creative and add your designs. Here we added a curved lines bouncing off the soccer ball.

Step 6:

Duplicate the second curved line from step five and resize the shape by 40%. Position it as shown below with a 20% opacity level.

Step 7:

To even out the whole design add curved lines coming from the ground. Then duplicate that curved line layer and resize by 80%, position the smaller curved at the bottom end.

Step 8:

Here we added more curved lines in unique formations, this require a lot of curved line layer copying and using the transform settings such as the rotate, scale and skewing to make unique lines.

Step 9:

Now add a logo of any soccer event by the soccer ball, here we used the logo for UEFA Euro 2008 tourney.

Step 10:

Add more curved line designs on the logo so it blends with the whole graphic design.

Step 2. SELECT & PASTE

Open the stock image of the lampshade provided, go to
SELECT/ALL (CTRL + A) on your Photoshop Tabs workspace on top. Paste the image on your stock image of your model with your visibility eye closed like in the shown example. The lampshade is visible selected in blue and the Move Tool has been selected.
The scene of the crime is set and you’re ready to manipulate.

Step 3. BLACK & WHITE

The model image selected in blue on your layers palette and your visibility closed on your second layer you are ready to convert to black & white. The ENHANCE/CONVERT TO BLACK& WHITE TAB (ALT + CTRL + B) is selected. The step will open up another image like shown and select Portraits for now, but feel free to select what ever pleases you.

Step 4. OPEN THE SECOND LAYER

The visibility eye is selected and your stock image of the lampshade is now open above the model. The move tool is selected and we begin to set the texture to the area you wish for. I settle for OVERLAY in my Blending Mode & using the Move Tool as well begin to made my adjustments as you see in the Image.

Step 5. SELECT ERASER TOOL

The Eraser Tool is used to remove unwanted Texture around the Face & Hat, get as close as you can and remember your erasing the texture and not the base image itself. Filters will come into play so do a nice tight job on the erasing, make the size smaller adjust your opacity to get close to the eyelashes. The face is left intact only the outer texture is removed.

Step 6. ADJUST LEVELS

Photoshop 5.0 has lots of hidden goodies and one of my favorites is adjusting the INPUT & OUPUT LEVELS. Select ENHANCE/ADJUST LIGHTING/LEVELS. Sliding the arrow tabs allow you to adjust the Levels on the Layer only leave the Channel at RGB and make the adjustments to your liking. Remember Photoshop has lots to help you with lighting and filters will also add lots more. Do the same with the Model layer as well.

Step 7. FILTERS

The image layers are flattened by LAYER/FLATTEN IMAGE. The Layers Visibility will show the layers flat and one image showing. The Filters Tab is now selecting and I decided to use Accented Edges to help the texture blend in with the base image of the Model. The Filters are made to explore try every single one don’t settle for just my idea try all your own. The tutorial is to help you create and use textures to expand your Photography with Photoshop 5.0
